I bought half a bushel of apples at an orchard down the street for $10 and made some apple crisp and chunky applesauce. Here is the recipe and instructions for canning the applesauce:
(btw I'm a lot like Rachel Ray in that I eyeball a lot of my recipes... so just use your imagination and creativity for this one)
Peel and Slice apples (best if you have pampered chef's apple corer slicer)
put in a big pot with about 1/2 cup water
bring to a boil and smash down with a potato smasher
they will begin to get softer, keep smashing and stirring until you receive the
chunkiness you like.
add sugar (I add brown) to liking
add cinnamon and nutmeg to liking
try not to burn your tongue while tasting because it gets pretty hot!
Dump into sterilized bottles until about an inch and a half to the top, get all air bubbles out by using a knife. put on sterilized lids and put in water bath for 20 minutes.
Wa La! your kids will love this!! Be sure to save some for those Winter days when you want to open a bottle of freshness!
